PCM (Powertrain Control Module) programming, often called "flashing" or "remapping," is the process of updating or rewriting the software that controls your vehicle’s engine and transmission. Think of it like updating the operating system on your phone—it ensures the hardware (the engine) is running the latest, most efficient instructions from the manufacturer.
ABS module programming and calibration are essential steps when replacing or repairing an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) module, often requiring a professional scan tool to program the VIN, transfer "As-Built" data, and calibrate sensors like the yaw rate and steering angle. The procedure includes resetting module memory, performing zero-point calibration on a level surface, and clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).
Body Control Module (BCM) programming involves configuring the computer that manages vehicle body electronics (lights, locks, wipers) using specialized tools like J2534 pass-through devices or high-end scanners. It is required when replacing a BCM to ensure compatibility, which typically involves using OEM software (like AC Delco TDS) to flash the new module with the VIN and specific vehicle configurations.
SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) module programming involves resetting or coding the Airbag Control Module (ACM/RCM) to clear crash data and configure it to a vehicle's VIN after an accident or replacement. This requires specialized diagnostic tools.
